Our client is currently recruiting for a Biomedical Scientist (BMS) to work in a busy NHS hospital.
Job Purpose:
Health Care Scientist specialised in Blood Sciences required to perform a range of analyses in Clinical biochemistry, Immunoassay, Haematology, Transfusion and Reception Services. Maintain the Laboratory Information Service on a daily basis allowing the service users/clients access to accurate and updated patient care test results. As specialised staff required to train and demonstrate methodologies on very complex analytical equipment to medical staff, clinical scientists, other BMS staff, new entrant staff, students and medical laboratory assistants (MLA). Overview of Essential Responsibilities:
1. Clinical Scientific & Management Responsibilities:
1.1 Communicates complex clinical scientific service related test information to managers, consultants, nurses, other health care colleagues, patients and patient carers.
1.2 Answers telephone inquiries from pathology users, patients and patient carers about test results and provide information that is complex about methodologies and service requirements.
1.3 Interprets results and reassures the users that the information is correct when results do not agree with clinical presentation and investigate and problem solve situations in their specialist field.
1.4 Manages own work and day-to-day routine work in specialised services.
1.5 Responsible for processing both urgent and routine work to maintain routine turnaround times in line with Trust and Service polices.
1.6 Maintains complex specialist analytical equipment on a daily basis and sign off as fit for clinical use.
1.7 Responsible for the efficient use of expensive tests and high value analysers.
1.8 Run test procedures on all methodologies on a daily basis to include calibration and quality control testing and sign off methods as fit for clinical use.
1.9 Fault find equipment and analyser function after formal in-house training.
1.10 Implement policies in specialised areas and propose changes that will improve and develop the service for users inside and outside the Trust.
1.11 Inform outside agencies and manufacturers of problems with equipment and help service engineers to repair and maintain laboratory equipment. Healthcare Scientist (Biomedical Scientist (BMS)) Band 6
1.12 Involved directly in the development and maintenance of standards as necessary for continuing CPA accreditation.
2. Responsibilities for Laboratory Information Service:
2.1 Manage and maintain specialised databases in laboratory computer systems and patient storage databases on daily basis.
2.2 Responsible for inputting and amending specialist patient data and results, which includes other colleagues work.
2.3 Responsible for use, retrieval and storage of patient information on several patient database systems for access by external and internal users.
2.4 Operates and manages software databases on complex clinical analysers.
3. Research, evaluation & service development:
3.1 Use research & development protocols on daily basis to provide statistical presentations of internal quality control to assess equipment performance in line with Westgard rules.
3.2 Evaluate and develop methods to improve the service and patient care diagnostic tests.
3.3 Investigate abnormal and unusual results by recognised research & development protocols to explain the anomalies.
3.4 Develop specialised services to include new and emerging technologies and develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
3.5 To receive appropriate training and maintain competency to the level required for Band 6 staff in order to support all services within the Blood Sciences Laboratory (Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology and Transfusion)
4. Staff development and training responsibilities
4.1 Educate and train Medical staff, Clinical Scientists, other BMS, Trainee BMS and MLA’s as required within their specialised area.
4.2 Demonstrate ongoing competence to practice by attending courses, lectures, mandatory Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and other training activities
4.3 Train in all specialised services according to the staff rotation programme.
4.4 To keep up to date with SOPs.
4.5 To actively participate in an Annual Personal Development review (PDR).
5. Health & Safety
5.1 Provide safety supervision & training for junior members of staff and actively promote safe working practices in all areas of the laboratory.
5.2 To abide by the Health and Safety Code of Practice for the Service
5.3 To ensure the application of Trust policies where applicable to the Pathology services.
5.4 To participate in an annual Health and Safety review
- – This position is looking to start as soon as possible for an ongoing period
- – Full-time or part-time placement (Job share available) – weekdays up to 19:00 & weekends
